The Very Best of Stand-Up and Sketch Comedy in the United States February 20, 2023 to February 26, 2023

An Intimate Evening with Adam Pally featuring Jon Gabrus, Lisa Gilroy, Gil Ozeri, Nick Thune and Damon Wayans Jr., Tuesday, February 21, 2023

What’s most interesting about this Tuesday at Largo is that it features actors we know from comedic series rather than downright stand-up comedians. For instance, Adam Pally is known for his roles in Happy Endings, The Mindy Project and Making History. Wayans Jr. just got a series order with his father. You get the drift. Oh, I’ll go, but this one could go either way.

Joe Rogan & Friends, Tuesday, February 21

joe rogan

Stand-up comedian turned muscle man turned podcast giant Joe Rogan lives down the block from this 6th Street, Steampunk-y music and comedy venue, so a night with him mouthing off seems an easy task. Still, how often does Rogan even do stand-up comedy any more – this could be worth some air flight miles.

Couples Therapy with Alan Adams & Friends, Wednesday, February 22, 2023

Stoney-faced, deadpan stand-up comedian and relationship-themed podcaster (Sorry for Screaming) Alan Adams must be hell at home. Sarcastic AND married, the Texan comic has taken both of those biographical elements into consideration with the creation of the Couple Therapy Comedy Show and its interacting live showcase for fellow marrieds daters or just double seated voyeurs.

Ariel Elias, Wednesday, February 22, 2023

Cool, calm, collected, New Yorker, social medium and virtual comedy fave Ariel Elias self-describes as a “Kentucky Jew who made everyone laugh at her bat mitzvah” who has performed on the set of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel sit-com. Both are good enough for me. And Jimmy Kimmel likes her, too.

Nick Hopping, Wednesday, February 22, 2023

Fresh from the Amazon streamer’s American Comic, Hopping’s wonky observational stand-up bits are actually best known from his time as host and co-founder of the Stand Up a La Mode series of weekly comedy shows in Brooklyn, NY. Buy this man a beer when you see him in Washington – any one who curates and promotes stand-up and sketch comedy as well as make it is aces in my book.

Aida Rodriguez, Thursday, February 23, 2023

Aida Rodriguez

Famous for her writing for Buzzfeed and Oprah.com, comedian has a deep abiding honesty to her stand-routine that can not be contained by the written word. Of Bostorn-born, Puerto Rican/Dominican descent, the eighth season contestant on Last Comic Standing touches dramatically on family life during her most recent HBO Max hour comedy special Fighting Words is currently streaming (she also stepped behind the camera to direct HBO Max’s current batch of Entre Nos specials) while keeping the laughs consistent. She’s in Kansas City this week, but look for my Philadelphia Weekly interview with Rodriguez before she starts her City Winery chain run of Philadelphia, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, NYC and beyond.

Drinking and Drawing with Shani Nizan, Thursday, February 23, 2023

How is hanging out with Israeli-born, New York based illustrator and tattoo artist Shani Nizan funny, especially when it is you – the audience – that will be challenged to perform in a live setting (all skill levels are welcome, and materials will be provided)? Because Nizan promotes genuine glee. “As we are born, we are free beings gifted with the ability to find the utmost joy in the small things, living in the moment through them,” she writes on her website. “As we get older and exposed to everyday life concerns, we have a tendency to detach from this pure state of mind that if kept, would maybe serve as a tool to deal with daily hardships. Through my art, I am looking to connect my audience and myself to that childlike feeling of innocence.” Plus, you are drinking and drawing. I’m already laughing.

Hannibal Buress, Saturday, February 25, 2023

The dry as dry ice stand-up comedian who made his fame dissing Bill Cosby (FINALLY) is far beyond that branding now. Actually, Buress has forever been an ingeniously intuitive and freewheeling observational mind. Forget I said the ‘Cosby’ thing. Find your own Hannibal Buress deep within. It will come.

Jimmy Shubert, Sunday, February 26, 2023

Stand-up comedian and actor Jimmy Shubert holds a deep place of honor in the hearts of many. Not only because he’s from Philly and had credits on The King of Queens without looking like a total douchebag (OK, I’ll give Kevin James a break as he was my late father’s favorite comedian). Shubert happens to be one of the surviving members of the loud, late, great Sam Kinison’s “Outlaws of Comedy,” touring stand-up comedy troupe. Pour out a 40 when you go and see Shubert in Arizona.
