‘Bigger than beer’: Triple Bottom Brewing and its TBL framework set to open later this Spring

For Bill Popwell, owning a brewery is “much bigger than beer.”

That’s why he, his wife, Tess Hart, and Kyle Carney – the latter serving as the head brewer – have been carefully planning out the opening of Triple Bottom Brewing since 2015.

With a business name that gives a nod to its triple bottom line approach (TBL) as a social, environmental and financial enterprise, Triple Bottom Brewing will open later this spring at 915 Spring Garden Street.

“We care about beer, people and the planet, and we are founded on the belief really that every person in every community has the opportunity to craft something great,”  Popwell, co-founder and chief marketing officer of Triple Bottom Brewing. “We craft great beers, they’re balanced, they’re full, they’re satisfying. [And] one of the ways that we feel that our model is particularly impactful is because we will create opportunities for people across Philadelphia to craft something great too.”

Popwell explained that the craft brews are “balanced, flavorful and satisfying.” The bar will offer a variety of brews from a hoppy lager at 5 ABV to a Triple Bottom Triple which is a strong beer with peach notes hovering around 9 ABV.

In an effort to be socially conscious, Powell said that they are a fair chance business and plans to work with local nonprofits to recruit people with diverse backgrounds and skill sets.

During the planning period, Triple Bottom Brewing had to secure funds to back the business, including an initial Indiegogo fundraising campaign which raised over $30k. Aside from the financial aspects of starting a business, the Triple Bottom Brewing team spent a lot of time on conceptualization in an effort to identify the best fit for space and neighborhood.

“I mean we love the building. It’s right on Spring Garden, which is a major thoroughfare. It’s within walking distance of Center City,” explained Popwell, adding that they also selected the location for its nearby community organizations. “It’s a spacious building which promises to be a very comfortable tap room.”

Another community that Popwell said he is excited to be joining is Philly’s craft brewery scene – even if it is a bit of a saturated market.

“The craft brewing community in Philadelphia is so neighborly and strong and the breweries in the areas have a similar mindset to us,” said Popwell. “If I have to choose between daunted and excited, I think definitely excited. The breweries that are already here make me even more excited, because it’s a great community to be a part of.”
